Can you be declined for burial insurance?
Direct Life Advisors is an independent life insurance agency, not an insurance company, and is not affiliated with any insurer mentioned here.
For a policy with health questions, yes. For a guaranteed issue policy, no — those accept every applicant within their issue ages, in exchange for a two-year limited benefit period.
So the real question is not whether you can be declined. It is which product your answers qualify you for.

What actually causes a decline
Declines in this market come from a short list of specific things rather than from general poor health: a diagnosis inside a carrier's look-back window, certain conditions in active treatment, current residence in a nursing home on some grids, and hospice or a terminal diagnosis.
What does not automatically decline an applicant is longer than people assume. Controlled blood pressure, controlled diabetes, a cardiac event far enough in the past, a cancer history past its window, and most maintenance medications are all routinely accepted by at least one carrier at a level rate.
Each of those is measured against a specific grid with specific time windows. This is why a general impression of your own health tells you almost nothing about the outcome.
A decline from one carrier is not a decline from the market
Health grids are not standardised. Carriers write different conditions differently because they price them differently, and an applicant declined at one company is issued at a level rate by another on the same answers.
No two carriers grade the same health answers the same way, and the term that governs you is the one in your own contract. Where a company is named on this site it is to help you find your own policy, not as a recommendation.
That is the practical reason to go through an independent agency rather than applying one company at a time: the answers get run against several grids before anything is submitted, and a formal decline on your record is avoided.
What the coverage has to cover
The National Funeral Directors Association's 2023 General Price List Study, released 8 December 2023, put the median funeral with viewing and burial at $8,300 and a cremation with viewing at $6,280. Neither figure includes the cemetery plot, the grave marker, or cash-advance items such as flowers and the obituary, and both are 2023 figures. NFDA news release, 8 December 2023.
A separate NFDA publication, its 2025 Cremation & Burial Report, puts the US cremation rate at 63.4%. That report is sold rather than published in full, so the figure is quoted from it and is not linked here.
Set a death benefit against those two figures and the arithmetic does the arguing. A $10,000 policy covers a cremation with money left over; it covers a burial only until the plot and the marker are added. That is the number worth deciding first, because everything else on this page is priced against it.
The fallback, and its cost
A guaranteed issue policy asks no health questions, and within its issue ages it is not underwritten on health. In exchange it carries a limited benefit period, and on most contracts it runs two years from the policy date.
Die of natural causes inside that window and the policy does not pay the death benefit. What it pays instead is set by the contract: the premiums that were paid back, and on some products more than that — a return of premiums plus a stated percentage on top. Which of those your policy does, and at what percentage, is written into the contract under the limited-benefit provision, and it differs by carrier, by product and by state. Read that provision, or have us read it with you, rather than relying on a figure from anywhere else. Death by accident is treated separately and is covered from the first day under most of these policies; again, the contract says which. Once the limited period ends, the full death benefit is in force.
No exam does not mean automatic approval, and automatic approval does not mean immediate full benefits. Those are three separate things, and the advertising in this category runs them together.
Talk to someone independent
