UNDERSTAND WHAT IS COVERED

Prepare for the unexpected, with clear expectations.

Accidental-death benefits and living-benefit riders serve different purposes. Learn where each may help, the events that trigger a benefit, and the limits that matter before you choose.

Discuss Accidental & Living Benefits
  • Accident-only coverage has a limited scope
  • Living benefits depend on qualifying conditions
  • Benefits may reduce a later death benefit
  • Review exclusions alongside existing coverage

What do these benefits mean?

Accidental death and dismemberment coverage may pay for specified accidental deaths or injuries. A living-benefit rider may allow access to part of a life policy’s death benefit after a qualifying diagnosis or condition. One does not automatically include the other.

How it works

Each contract defines qualifying events, exclusions, benefit amounts, and claim requirements. An accelerated death benefit can reduce the remaining death benefit and may involve fees or other consequences. Accident-only insurance generally does not pay for death from illness.

Situations worth discussing

  • Reviewing a gap in accident-specific protection
  • Understanding riders already on a policy
  • Considering eligible accelerated-benefit options
  • Comparing supplemental coverage with full life insurance

A FEW COMMON QUESTIONS

Accidental & Living Benefits, explained.

What is AD&D insurance?

It is accident-specific coverage that may pay for a covered death or specified serious injury. The policy defines eligible accidents and exclusions.

What are living benefits?

Some life policies have riders that permit access to benefits while living after a qualifying condition. Availability, triggers, costs, and limits vary.

Can it replace regular life insurance?

Accident-only coverage generally excludes death from illness and should not be assumed to replace broader life insurance.

How much does it cost?

The cost depends on the coverage, benefit amount, rider, insurer, and eligibility. Review both the premium and the limitations before deciding.
