Is there guaranteed issue life insurance with no waiting period? Not in this market
Direct Life Advisors is an independent life insurance agency, not an insurance company, and is not affiliated with any insurer mentioned here.
In the final expense market, guaranteed issue and a limited benefit period go together. A policy that asks no health questions and still pays its full death benefit from day one is not something carriers sell in this category.
What does exist is coverage that pays from day one for people who answer health questions. That is a different product with a different name, and the questions are narrower than most applicants expect.

What guaranteed issue actually gives you
A guaranteed issue policy asks no health questions, and within its issue ages it is not underwritten on health. In exchange it carries a limited benefit period, and on most contracts it runs two years from the policy date.
Die of natural causes inside that window and the policy does not pay the death benefit. What it pays instead is set by the contract: the premiums that were paid back, and on some products more than that — a return of premiums plus a stated percentage on top. Which of those your policy does, and at what percentage, is written into the contract under the limited-benefit provision, and it differs by carrier, by product and by state. Read that provision, or have us read it with you, rather than relying on a figure from anywhere else. Death by accident is treated separately and is covered from the first day under most of these policies; again, the contract says which. Once the limited period ends, the full death benefit is in force.
No exam does not mean automatic approval, and automatic approval does not mean immediate full benefits. Those are three separate things, and the advertising in this category runs them together.
The product that does pay from day one
The product that pays from day one is simplified issue. It asks health questions — a page of them, no exam, no blood work — and if the answers clear the carrier's grid the policy pays its full death benefit from the first day it is issued.
That is the real choice on the table: answer the questions and get covered now, or skip them and wait two years. The health grids are built around managed conditions — controlled blood pressure, controlled diabetes, an event far enough in the past — and a diagnosis that sounds disqualifying out loud is frequently not one on the grid. The only way to find out is to run the questions.
There is also a middle, and this is where the vocabulary gets slippery: the word graded gets used both for the limited benefit period on a no-questions policy and for a middle tier that does ask questions. Read what the contract does rather than what the brochure calls it.
Those middle tiers are labeled modified, and sometimes graded as well. They ask health questions and they still delay full benefits: a partial payout in year one, more in year two, the full amount after that. If your answers land you in one of those, you are paying more than the level product and waiting as well, which is an expensive place to end up by accident.
What the coverage has to cover
The National Funeral Directors Association's 2023 General Price List Study, released 8 December 2023, put the median funeral with viewing and burial at $8,300 and a cremation with viewing at $6,280. Neither figure includes the cemetery plot, the grave marker, or cash-advance items such as flowers and the obituary, and both are 2023 figures. NFDA news release, 8 December 2023.
A separate NFDA publication, its 2025 Cremation & Burial Report, puts the US cremation rate at 63.4%. That report is sold rather than published in full, so the figure is quoted from it and is not linked here.
Set a death benefit against those two figures and the arithmetic does the arguing. A $10,000 policy covers a cremation with money left over; it covers a burial only until the plot and the marker are added. That is the number worth deciding first, because everything else on this page is priced against it.
How to find out which one you qualify for
The questions take a few minutes and they are narrower than people expect — specific conditions, specific medications, specific time windows since a diagnosis or an event.
Because the grids differ between carriers, the useful version of this is running your answers against several at once. An applicant who lands in a graded tier at one company clears the grid at another, and the difference is both the cost and the two-year wait.
No two carriers grade the same health answers the same way, and the term that governs you is the one in your own contract. Where a company is named on this site it is to help you find your own policy, not as a recommendation.
