Mutual of Omaha final expense coverage — how the product is built

Direct Life Advisors is an independent life insurance agency, not an insurance company, and is not affiliated with any insurer mentioned here.

Mutual of Omaha writes a small whole life product for the final expense market under the name Living Promise. It comes in two tiers, and which one you are offered is decided entirely by how you answer the health questions.

The gap between those two tiers is the single most consequential thing on this page.

Talk it through with a licensed agent.

Fifteen minutes, no charge — we'll tell you which product your answers qualify for and what it costs, across several carriers at once.

No cost to you. We're paid a commission by the insurance company only if you later buy through us — never by you.

Level and graded

The Level tier pays the full death benefit from the day the policy is issued. To get it, your answers have to clear the carrier's health grid.

Graded is the tier for applicants whose answers do not clear it. The policy issues, but the full death benefit is delayed — a partial benefit in the first years, full coverage after the limited period ends.

The graded tier also costs more than the level tier for the same face amount. That is the part people find hard to believe and it is consistent across the market: you pay more and you wait.

Which tier you land in is decided by specific conditions on a specific list, not by a general impression of your health. Two people who both describe themselves as "not in great shape" routinely land in different tiers.

Why the health questions are worth answering

The instinct, when a policy exists that asks no questions at all, is to take that one and avoid the risk of being turned down. For most applicants that instinct costs money and costs coverage.

The carriers' health grids are built around managed conditions. Controlled blood pressure, controlled diabetes, a heart event far enough in the past, a cancer history past its look-back window — none of those automatically routes an applicant to the slowest tier. The questions are narrower and more specific than people expect.

The only way to know which tier you qualify for is to run the questions, and running them costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

What the coverage has to cover

The National Funeral Directors Association's 2023 General Price List Study, released 8 December 2023, put the median funeral with viewing and burial at $8,300 and a cremation with viewing at $6,280. Neither figure includes the cemetery plot, the grave marker, or cash-advance items such as flowers and the obituary, and both are 2023 figures. NFDA news release, 8 December 2023.

A separate NFDA publication, its 2025 Cremation & Burial Report, puts the US cremation rate at 63.4%. That report is sold rather than published in full, so the figure is quoted from it and is not linked here.

Set a death benefit against those two figures and the arithmetic does the arguing. A $10,000 policy covers a cremation with money left over; it covers a burial only until the plot and the marker are added. That is the number worth deciding first, because everything else on this page is priced against it.

One carrier is one answer

Living Promise is one product from one company. A different carrier's grid treats the same medication or the same diagnosis differently, and the applicant who lands in a graded tier at one company lands level at another.

No two carriers grade the same health answers the same way, and the term that governs you is the one in your own contract. Where a company is named on this site it is to help you find your own policy, not as a recommendation.

That is what an independent agency is for: running the same set of answers against several grids at once, and taking the best result. We will do that with you on the phone, at no charge.

Talk to someone independent

Direct Life Advisors is an independent agency with 52 carrier relationships. A licensed agent will read the contract with you — the product name, the face amount, and whether a limited benefit period applies — and tell you what it means. At no charge to you. We're paid a commission by the insurance company only if you later buy through us — never by you.
